Abstract

Infusion of 0.5 molar sodium lactate has been reported to provoke panic attacks in patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia with panic attacks (Liebowitz et al. 1984, 1985a), and subjects with a previous history of panic attacks (Cowley et al. 1987b). On the other hand, normal controls and patients with social phobia (Liebowitz et al. 1985b), obsessive compulsive disorder (Gorman et al. 1985), or major depression without a history of panic attacks respond significantly less often with panic during the infusion procedure.
