Abstract

Recruitment of patients for the national multicenter treatment project began on 1 November 1983, following a pilot period of over 3 years. The protocol is designed to allow comparison of simple mastectomy against excision of the primary tumor with subsequent radiation of the breast with reference to the local recurrence rate and disease-free survival in patients with breast cancer classified pathohistologically as pT1 pN0 M0. [13]. The results of several controlled studies comparing simple mastectomy with the Rotter-Halsted procedure [2,7,9] justified the early view of simple mastectomy as standard therapy in this early tumor stage. Retrospective studies, especially in France, Scandinavia, and the USA, subsequently gave rise to the suspicion that breast-conserving treatment might be just as satisfactory as radical surgery [1,3–5,10–12,14,15,17]. But even now the NSABP-06 protocol (National Surgical and Breast Project) has been published [8], the equal value of the two procedures still cannot be regarded as confirmed.
