Brussels Sprout (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) and Broccoli (B. oleracea var. italica)

  • Chapter
Crops II

Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 6))

Abstract

Brussels Sprout. Brussels sprout (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) as its name suggests, originated in Belgium, probably near Brussels. Although Brussels sprouts were allegedly sold in Belgian markets as early as the 13th century, they did not become commercially important until the 19th century (MacCarthy 1986). The crop is ideally suited to the cooler, temperate regions of Europe, with the largest concentration in the UK. Elsewhere they are grown to a limited extent in a number of countries including the United States.
