Abstract
Prostaglandins (PGs), produced via the cyclo-oxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism, have been implicated in reproductive physiology since they were first discovered in semen in the mid 1930s and it is now widely accepted that they play important roles in processes such as ovulation, luteinization, implantation and parturition (Poyser 1981). In recent years, however, the presence of active lipoxygenase pathways for polyunsaturated fatty acids such as arachidonic acid (AA) has also been demonstrated in both human and animal reproductive tissues (Morgan et al. 1987). The uterus of various species was shown to respond to lipoxygenase products (Weichman and Tucker 1982) and as with PGs, their formation appears to be hormone-dependent (Thaler-Dao et al. 1985; Morgan et al. 1986) and varies during the ovarian cycle (Morgan et al. 1984; Rees et al. 1987). Such data stimulate interest in the possible involvement of products of this pathway in uterine physiology/pathophysiology.
