Fast All-Optical Switching in a Silicon-On-Sapphire Waveguide

Abstract

Using the excitation by a pulsed laser beam of a guided mode in a nonlinear silicon film deposited on sapphire, fast optical switching and bistability have been observed. Ä theoretical study, taking into account both electronic and thermal refractive index variations is presented which describes well the experimental results.
