Abstract

The devices that make modern information processing and computing possible are often referred to as “switches”. This appellation was literally true when applied to the earliest large electrical computers. The relays that they used were switches in the classical sense, they made and broke contact between two pieces of metal. More recent devices attempt to emulate the relay and the electrically activated switch without mechanical motion and thereby escape from some of the limitations of the relay.
