Abstract
Among all metals, gold has the extra peculiarity (besides others!) that none of its low-index surfaces is stable with its “ideal” periodic structure. Reconstruction takes place systematically, apparently dictated by the strong necessity of a better surface packing than that attainable by simple relaxation.
