Safe and efficient treatment of the underlying infection with the HIV virus (HTLV III-LAS virus) is not yet possible. Any chemotherapeutic agents used have to suppress the virus proliferation and probably must be given for very long periods — maybe for life. The investigational drug azidothymidine (AZT) apparently has activity in HIV infection; however, it is not free from severe side effects (anemia, neutropenia, central nervous system toxicity). It is an open question whether a safe, simple, cheap and curative therapy of HIV infection can ever be developed.
