Abstract
Several types of osteomyelitis can be distinguished: acute hematogenous osteo-myelitis, exogenous osteomyelitis (direct inoculation of bacteria by trauma or at operation), and chronic osteomyelitis. In Africa, osteomyelitis and its sequelae continue to be a major medical problem. The majority of patients present late in hospital. Often bone necrosis (sequestrum formation) has already supervened. Other complications, such as pathological fractures, dislocation of the hip, infection of an adjacent joint, and limitation of joint movements, are also common. In cases of chronic osteomyelitis, discharging sinuses are frequent.
