Abstract

Pollen quality is a parameter which is rather difficult to estimate. In maize, pollen quality has been monitored using cytological (fluorochromatic reaction), (Heslop-Harrison et al. 1984) physiological (water content measurement and in vitro germination), biochemical (ATP assay with luciferine-luciferase reaction) (Matthys-Rochcon E. et al. 1988) and biophysical techniques (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of 31P). All these tests have been performed every 30 min. on samples from the same pollen population which has been submitted to natural ageing process.
