Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease that produces systemic symptoms and a variety of extra-articular manifestations as well as inflammation of the joints with the capacity to cause damage to articular cartilage and erosion of periarticular bone. Since the etiology of the disease is unknown, therapy is not directed toward cure, but rather toward suppression of one or other aspects of the inflammatory process, in the hope of ameliorating local and systemic symptoms, and also preventing joint destruction.
