Abstract
IgE antibodies are normally involved in the elimination of parasites, but they are also produced in some individuals against antigens which should normally be eliminated by another class of antibody. Such antigens are called allergens. Structural characteristics of antigens may determine allergenicity to some extent, but dysregulation of the immune response is the major reason for the development of IgE-mediated allergy. Recent studies indicate that the type of antibody produced to a particular antigen is governed by Fc receptor-bearing T cells and class-specific immunoglobulin-binding factors which can suppress, or in some cases enhance, the response of that isotype (Löwy et al. 1983). Of the immunoglobulin-binding factors, those which regulate the initiation of an IgE response have been the best studied and are described in this chapter. Mechanisms involved in maintaining a high level of IgE synthesis long after allergen exposure are more complex, and persisting IgE-secreting cells can be refractory to T cell control (Holt and Turner 1985).
