Abstract

A sponge-like mass of reticuloendothelial tissue, the spleen is located upstream of the hepatic portal system and is supplied by a large artery: this makes the organ particularly susceptible to parasitic infections. Certain parasites infest the spleen itself, while others attack the hepatic structures, leading to secondary splenic venous stasis. The splenomegaly that frequently accompanies parasitic infections reflects the body’s immune response to such insults (Wyler 1983).
