Abstract
Interaction of Hoechst 33258 (2-[2-(4-hydroxy Phenyl)-6-Benzimidalzolyl]-6-(1-methyl-4-piperazyl)-Benzimidazole) with model membranes of EPC, DPPC, DMPC and PS was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy. Hoechst 33258 alone is a weak fluorescent while bound to lipid bilayer gives high fluorescence at 460 nm. The fluidity changes in the membranes were followed by steady state fluorescence polarization of Hoechst 33258 as it is embedded in the lipid bilayer. We propose that the Hoechst 33258 could be used as a probe to study the membrane dynamics.
