Abstract
There is accumulating evidence that different classical neurotransmitters such as serotonin, catecholamines and the amino acid GABA may serve as epigenetic factors during neuronal development and differentiation (1, 2, 3, 4). Since a variety of macromolecular compounds, mainly peptides, are also known to act as neurotrophic factors (5) it is clear that the extremely complex processes which govern the development and differentiation of the neuronal network and communication system in the central nervous system are subject to regulation at a number of different levels. The present review will concentrate on a summary of the recent progress in studies concerned with the possible role of GABA and GABA agonists as agents stimulating neuronal development in vitro and in vivo.
