Applications of Genetic Engineering to “Symbiontology” in Agriculture

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIH,volume 17))

Abstract

Symbiosis represents an ancestral form of cell-to-cell interaction, often offering the partnership unique adaptations to environmental conditions. Agricultural activities have added selective pressure on symbiotic systems, particularly if some managerial practices are considered; these include conventional plant breeding, massive use of fertilizers and pesticides, cropping forest land and marginal areas. As a consequence, symbioses such as mycorrhizae, actinorrhizae, Rhizobiaceae/Leguminosae, Termitomyces/termites, lichens, tend to be disrupted or become inappropriate for the new food, feed, and energy demands.
