Abstract
Membranes are critical targets leading to cell killing as a result of cellular photosensitization. Published results indicate that synthetic dyes (acridines, phenothiazines and xanthenes), porphyrins (hematoporphyrin, hematoporphyrin derivative and protoporphyrin) and other naturally occurring sensitizers (alpha terthienyl and phenylheptatriyne) can inactivate living cells via membrane effects. These effects have been demonstrated on such diverse organisms as viruses, bacteria, cells of hamsters, mice and humans, as well as plant tissues (Valenzeno, 1987). Thus a comprehension of sensitized photomodification of cellular membranes is important to an understanding of photosensitized cell killing/inactivation.
