Abstract
Neutron and Raman scattering have revealed the existence of very interesting phenomena in systems with 4f and 5f electronic levels. Those most investigated include: 1) mixed valence phase transitions, 2) the occurrence of heavy fermions, 4) the presence of the rare earth elements in the high Tc superconductors.
