Summary

Large differences in supporting nitrogenase activity existed between 14 German cereal cultivars. Fractions of active plants ranged between 3 and 67% and maximal activities between 5 and 35 nmol C2H4.h−1. No significant differences were found in harvest parameters, root populations of Azospirillum and fractions of active F 1 plants between nitrogenase positive and negative wheat plants. Ear emergence of active plants was accelerated.
