Systematics of the Bryophytes

Abstract

There are two antagonistic trends in current bryophyte systematics: on the one hand, numerous new species are described. In the years 1984 and 1985 approximately 5 new genera and 70 species of hepatics have been described and about 6 genera and 50 species of mosses. On the other hand, monographs and revisions reduce the number of species consistently. Especially in tropical genera and families, reductions of 50–70% of the number of species is normal, eliminating dozens of species described as “endemic” from small ranges and thus preparing a base for further phytogeographic considerations. The description of new genera in mosses especially concerns the pleurocarpous mosses (Harveya, Hookeriaceae: CRUM 1985a, Podperaea, Hypnaceae: IWATZUKI and GLIME 1984).
