Primary Δ\( \bar \mu \)H Generators

  • Chapter
Membrane Bioenergetics

Abstract

Systems competent in protonic potential generation at the expense of an external energy source, such as light or oxidizable substrate and oxygen, can be defined as the primary Δ\( \bar \mu \)H generators. They should be distinguished from the secondary Δ\( \bar \mu \)H generators utilizing ATP, PPi or a solute gradient preformed in a Δ\( \bar \mu \)H (or substrate level phosphorylation)-linked fashion.
