Abstract
The tropical rain forest is such a diverse and complex system that a precise definition of it is hard to give. But its characteristics are clear. The tropical rain forest consists mainly of evergreen woody vegetation, forming a thick canopy, so dense that it is impossible to see the ground from above the trees. Consequently, little plant life grows at ground level. This clear area is several metres high, and is easy to walk through. No word for it exists; but it might be called the hall of the forest.
