Anatomy and Biomechanics of the Anteroposterolateral Femorotibial Structures in the Iliotibial Band System

Abstract

The distal iliotibial tract is a principal structure of the lateral side of the knee. Whereas extensive procedures involving this structure have been proposed to increase knee stability and to augment an intraarticular reconstruction [1, 3], the descriptions of the functional anatomy of the distal tract remain inconsistent [4, 5, 10]. This study deals with the detailed anatomy and function of the distal-femoral fixation of the iliotibial tract.
