Fluid Drilling of Embryos in Potato Improvement — A Future Possibility

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 3))

Abstract

The potato is propagated vegetatively, whereby portions of the tuber are used as propagules. Typically, each propagule or ‘seed piece’ weighs up to 56 g and 2.2 mt of tubers are utilized to plant 1 ha. This amounts to about 15% of the world potato yield. For the most part, controlled environment storage is required to ensure the best health of planting material. Storage can last for 5 to 6 months and can be expensive in terms of energy cost.
