Abstract
The BioBreeding rat develops a spontaneous diabetic syndrome resembling human type 1 diabetes mellitus. The salient features include: abrupt onset of insulin-dependent, ketosis-prone diabetes between 60–120 days of age [1]; lymphocytic insulitis with virtually complete destruction of the pancreatic B-cells [2, 3]; genetic predisposition and the occurrence of hyperglycemia in approximately 40%–80% of the inbred BioBreeding/Worcester (BB/Wor) colony [4].
