Abstract

The physics of phase transitions has experienced substantial progress and an increase in experimental and theoretical activity during the past decade. Due not least to recognition of the importance of dimensionality, this development also spread over into surface physics, where 2-dimensional or quasi-2-dimensional systems are available for investigation, allowing a check of the fundamental theoretical concepts. Considerable efforts were made, both theoretical and experimental, and today a variety of phase diagrams of adsorbate systems are known /e. g. 1–5/. In some cases even critical parameters of phase transitions have been experimentally determined /6–8/.
