Abstract
It is well established that a simple voluntary movement is preceded by a slow negative cortical potential shift. This preparatory negative wave was first reported by Kornhuber and Deecke (1965) and called Bereitschaftspotential (BP) or readiness potential. In subsequent investigations performed by Lang et al. (1984, this volume), the method of movement-related potential recording was extended to more complex actions: a simple voluntary movement triggered the onset of sensory-guided movements of the hand. This experimental design was suitable for the investigation of anticipatory adjustments directed toward the forthcoming sensorimotor task. In the BP preceding the task, electrophysiological signs of attention directed toward the presentation of the sensory cues could be demonstrated.
