Since the first International Conference in 1962 on “Erythropoietin and Regulation of Erythropoiesis” organized by Leon Jacobson and Margot Doyle, several conferences of this type have occured. It was not until 1970 that the Second International Conference on the “Regulation of Erythropoiesis” was held, this being followed by the third meeting held in 1971 in Capri. The proceedings of this conference were published a year later. The Fouth International Conference on Erythropoiesis was held in Tokyo in 1974, followed by the fifth in Knoxville in 1980. In 1985, a conference entitled “Humoral and Cellular Regulation of Erythropoiesis” was held in Minneapolis. Although these meetings dealt more or less specifically with erythropoiesis, one should not forget that many more meetings dealing with haemopoiesis have included erythropoiesis and various other topics; these are in addition to the annual meeting of the International Society of Experimental Hematology and the many local hematology society meetings all of which have provided excellent forums for the exchange of ideas, controversies, but also friendships and collaborations.
