Honeybees of Tropical Africa

  • Friedrich Ruttner

Abstract

In Africa south of the Sahara probably more bee colonies are found than in the remaining part of the orginal mellifera area in Eurasia. Most of the colonies exist in feral condition, nevertheless the above statement is supported by an estimate of the number of bee colonies derived from the annual export of beeswax as given below (Table 12.1). These figures are available for only a few countries since in many others no export of beeswax takes place at all, in spite of a similar density of the bee population, because no market is available for this product.
