Abstract

Association of cancer with transplantation may be seen in three situations:

  1. 1.

The graft recipient is prone to development of de novo malignancies as a consequence of immunosuppression.

  2. 2.

Patients who have been treated previously for cancer may plan to undergo transplantation (tumor patient as graft recipient). In this situtation the question arises whether or not the subsequent immunosuppression would promote tumor recurrence.

  3. 3.

Malignancies arising in the organ itself or metastatically from other sites may be transplanted accidentally with the homograft (tumor patient as organ donor).
