Studying Temporal Order in Human CNS by Means of “Running” Frequency and Coherence Analysis

Abstract

Within living systems functions of the nervous system are not static but rather dynamic processes, exhibiting a well-ordered change of activity and of synergy in time. Such cyclic alterations of the CNS state form certain biological rhythms and oscillations with a great variety of period lengths ranging from milliseconds to months (e.g. cardio-vascular and respiratory 1-minute rhythm [1,2] or circa 90-minute ‘Basic Rest-Activity Cycles’ of the CNS;[3,4]). A survey of such ultraand additional circa-and infra-dian human rhythmicities is given by HILDEBRANDT in this volume.
