Abstract

The electrical activity of the brain can be recorded by electroencephalographic techniques (EEG) and is widely used in medical diagnosis. This electrical information may be analysed in various ways in order to obtain some clues regarding the structure and function of the brain. The recent developments of nonlinear dynamics (1–6) have provided new methods which are particularly interesting for the analysis of data obtained from complex systems such as the EEG. From the successive measurements at regular time intervals (time series) of a single time dependent property of the system, one tries to reconstruct the underlying dynamical processes (7–11).
