Abstract

The presence and type or absence of liver disease can be assessed with high accuracy by modern biochemical, serological, and morphological tests. In contrast, assessment of severity and prognosis have remained difficult. These two aspects, however, are being accorded increasing importance with regard to therapeutic strategies, particularly regarding liver transplantation and the appreciation of the effects of pharmacological treatments.
