Abstract
Poland is among the European countries with a low risk of breast cancer in women. Only in the 1980s has this site become the number one cause of cancer mortality in women. The ASMR was 9.3 in 1963 and 15.0 in 1982. A steady increase in the mortality rate was observed in the period 1963–1982, on average by 2.87% annually. The mortality rate increases rapidly from the age of 30 years, the curve forms a plateau at the age of about 50, after which it rises again. The highest value in 1982 was about 70 deaths per 100000 women aged 65 and over. The mortality/age curves of 1963 and 1982 differ in their steepness, especially in the age groups over 50 years. The breast cancer mortality rate is marked by a substantial increase in the age groups over time and in successive birth cohorts. The risk in the cohort born in 1940 is almost four times greater than the rates for the 1880 cohort.
