Abstract

Sexual reproduction in the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas is proving to be one of the most successful plant systems for studying cell-cell recognition in all its different facets. The two most popular species under investigation are C.reinhardii and C.eugametos. They are sexually incompatible and only distantly related to each other (Lemieux and Lemieux, 1985). It is therefore not surprising that rather obvious differences exist between them. Indeed some will be mentioned in this review of the most recent work on C.eugametos. Nonetheless, these two species have maintained or co-evolved similar strategies for sexual reproduction. Ihus while research on Chlamydomonas falls into two camps, the two complement each other, for any differences tend to be quantitative rather than qualitative.
