Abstract

Since Virchow [58] (1847), neuropathologists have attempted to classify the many types of intracranial tumors by morphologic criteria and differentiate them according to their biologic behaviors. The classification of brain tumors has been greatly advanced by the work of Bailey and Cushing [5, 6] (1926, 1930), Kernohan and Sayre [29], Russel and Rubinstein [50] (1977), and Zülch [64–66]. The scheme of Kernohan et al. [28] combines a histologic classification by cell type with a biologic grading of malignancy and recognizes four stages. In 1979 a tumor classification and grading system was developed under the auspices of the World Health Organization [65], and that system will form the basis for the description of MR findings in this text.
