Zusammenfassung
Unter den menschlichen Kommunikationssystemen nimmt das Sinnesorgan „Ohr“ eine bevorzugte Stellung ein. In der kommunikativen Beziehung zwischen Menschen stellen Hören und Sprechen ein einheitliches System von elementarer Bedeutung dar. Besonders in unserer heutigen modernen Industrie- und Konsumgesellschaft mit seinen ständig wachsenden akustischen Informationsangeboten ist das menschliche Individuum verstärkt auf das Sinnesorgan Ohr angewiesen. Einige wichtige Beispiele mögen belegen, welche Bedeutung das Gehör für die Kommunikation und das Hören im Alter in unserer alltäglichen Umgebung hat:

► Die Wahrnehmung akustischer Warn- und Informationssignale z.B. im Straßenverkehr, am Arbeitsplatz oder im häuslichen Bereich setzt ein weitgehend intaktes Gehör voraus.

► Die Bedeutung des Telefons als Kommunikationsmittel macht auch im privaten Alltag ein intaktes Sinnesorgan „Gehör“ notwendig.

► Da die Werbung sich zunehmend mehr akustischer Reize bedient, die durch das Sinnesorgan Gehör vermittelt werden können, ist auch für diese Bereiche das menschliche Sinnesorgan vor allem im Alter von Bedeutung.

► Die Bedeutung der Musik für die Lebensqualität des einzelnen belegt eindrucksvoll, daß ein großes Bedürfnis besteht, die akustische Erlebniswelt der Musik in seiner ganzen Vielfalt zu nutzen.
