Abstract
Application of exogenous ouabain into the brain tissue induces cytotoxic brain edema with swelling of glia cells (3,5). This phenomenon is characterized, not only by toxic, but also by ischemic and vasogenic brain edema (2) and is accompanied by reversible decrease of membranal brain ATPase activity (11). The detection of an endogenous ouabain like substance (EOLS) in the brain tissue of animals (1,4,7,9,12) and in the human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (6,10) suggests that this factor may participate in the pathogenesis of brain edema. The data to be reported are consistent with this hypothesis.
