Abstract

The interest in research into hypertension is become focused on the circulating endogenous digitalis-like factor (EDLF). Since EDLF increases when a high-sodium diet was given (7,8) and it has been known that human hypertension is closely associated with an intake of excess salt, the increased level of EDLF caused by an excess sodium, might cause an increase in blood pressure. Because plasma levels of EDLF become elevated when hypertonic saline was intracerebroventricularly infused (9), central nervous system must play a key role in releases of EDLF. On the other hand, Tamura et al. (6) claim that they purified the EDLF from the adrenal tissue. we aimed, in the present study, to search ouabain-like immunoreactive substances in the brain and the adrenal gland by an immunocytochemical technique and radioimmunoassay with mono- and poly-clonal ouabain-antibodies, respectively.
