Summary
The revascularization of the superficial femoral artery can be performed by endarterectomy, bypass, P.T.A. and thrombolysis. From 1987 through 1992 end- arterectomy was made in 79 cases. The early (1 year) results show a patency rate of 95%. The differences between endarterectomy and bypass methods were not statistically significant.
The late results, however, demonstrate a higher patency rate for the autologous vein bypass. The results of the endarterectomy were better than those achieved with prosthetic bypasses, and they show lower morbidity.
We are of the opinion that endarterectomy with peroperative angiography and angioscopy presents an alternative in the revascularization of the superficial femoral artery.
