Summary
The isolated occlusion of the femoral artery usually results in PAOD FONTAINE stage II. As bypass surgery increasingly is only indicated in severe cases of intermittent claudication, conservative therapy has become treatment of choice in PAOD stage II. Consistent physical training is the basic procedure of treatment. Pharmacological therapy includes management of risk factors and concomitant cardiopulmonary diseases, inhibition of platelet aggregation by aspirin or ticlopidin. This therapy is completed by administration of vasoactive substances and prostaglandines.
