Abstract

During this symposium on “Angiotensin and the Heart”, an appraisal of the present experimental and clinical evidence for the existence and function of the cardiac renin-angiotensin system has been made. It is now accepted that the renin-angiotensin system originally detected as a classical humoral system, which secretes active molecules from a gland reaching their receptors of a target organ via the blood, may also reside in many tissues, especially in organs involved in cardiovascular regulation like the heart and vessels (Tigerstedt and Bergman, 1897; Dzau, 1990).
