Abstract
The exploitation of hybrid vigour through the use of hybrid varieties is one of the major achievements of plant breeding. F1 hybrids are generally superior in reliability of yield and quality. Hybrids also offer the opportunities for the rapid deployment of resistance to diseases and pests by using dominant genes. Breeders are able to charge higher prices for hybrid seed and benefit from the exclusivity that ownership of the parent lines of a successful hybrid provide. This guarantees return sales to the seed supplier.
