A severe burn injury is still a life-threatening event. Therefore, it is crucial that every detail of therapy is optimised. One can distinguish different phases in the course of the burn illness: burn shock (~24h), ebb and flow phases (~ first week) and the complex syndrome of burn illness (several weeks), which is determined by sequential operations, by the deterioration of various organ systems and by multiple infections. For adequate treatment a knowledge of the complex shift in fluids, proteins and electrolytes is necessary.
