Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and its incidence has been steadily increasing over the past couple of decades. According to the American Cancer Society, the estimated risk of a woman developing breast cancer at some time in her life is now 1:9, almost double the risk observed in 1940, and breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer death among women in most Western countries. For many cancers, a patient surviving 5 years after primary treatment is considered cured. This is not so for breast cancer, where the risk of recurrence persists after 5 years of survival, although it is decreased.
