Abstract
The final years of the 20th century which is now drawing to a close have led to a new line-up within international competition. Significant changes have occurred within the triad of Southeast Asia (in particular Japan, but also the “Four Small Tigers”), the USA and Europe. In the post war period, Japan has discovered how to successfully conquer the economic dominance of Europe and the USA. Certainly, this was favoured by changing external conditions regarding economic policy (e.g. the role of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in Japan), the money markets (better availability of capital at low interest rates) and a favourable cultural environment (for participation and group work). Nevertheless, this success cannot be traced back only to these conditions.
