Zusammenfassung
Über 90% des gesamten aufgenommenen Sauerstoffs wird für die Gewinnung von Energie bei der Zellatmung in den Mitochondrien benötigt. Sauerstoff dient hierbei als terminaler Elektronenakzeptor, auf den Reduktionsäquivalente von den Metaboliten der aufgenommenen Nahrungsstoffe übertragen werden. Aus physikalischen Gründen ist auf Sauerstoff nur die schrittweise Übertragung von jeweils einem Elektron möglich. Hierdurch entstehen bis zur Wasserbildung, dem Endprodukt der Atmung, zum reil hochreaktive Sauerstoffmetabolite.
