Abstract
Regarding the well-ordered and relatively short developmental course of presperma-togenesis and the clear organizational pattern of adult spermatogenesis, the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) largely resembles other rodent species, such as the rat and mouse. The seasonal cycle of the golden hamster’s reproductive activity did not affect the present investigation because of the artificially controlled cycle of 14 h light and 10 h darkness. As the period of prespermatogenesis has been studied by the present author in the golden hamster (Miething 1989, 1990, 1992a, 1993), the choice of this species for the present investigation allows direct reference to the foregoing period of testicular development.
