Summary
By virtue of the tissue penetration of about 5 mm, the 50-MHz ultrasound biomicroscope allows the visualization of various accommodative changes within the anterior segment with a resolution approaching 50 µm. Voluntary or pharmacologically induced accommodative reaction could be documented online on video-tape for further digital imaging processing. During accommodation the anterior part of the ciliary body ceased to move antero-inwardly in young and elderly probands. Simultaneously, changes of the iris configuration and in the dimension of the anterior chamber could be observed. Further investigations, especially with three-dimensional reconstruction, will be necessary to evaluate the influence of refraction and age on accommodative changes of the ciliary region.
