Abstract

The appearance of ductlike structures around portal tracts is a well known feature of many chronic liver diseases. These structures are called ductular proliferations, pseudoductules or pseudocholangioles and are thought to be one marker for the activity of the periportal fibrotic process (Popper et al., 1962; Scheuer, 1980). They are formed by small cells with a large nucleus and tiny basophilic cytoplasm, lining a round or flattened lumen at the margin of portal tracts and septa (Steiner and Carruthers, 1961). Their origin and function still remains unknown although they have been discussed for many years.
